You are not important!… Okay you are…. but not the way we think.

It is not tolerated to say “I am not important”  in today’s culture.  It falls somewhere between self pity and suicidal thoughts in the minds of people.  We as Christians are quick to pull out verses to fill our sense of self worth.  We are created in His Image (Gen1:27) and His eye is on the sparrow(Matt 10 29). These verses are beautiful and true but I think we have assumed that we are the most important thing to God.

Okay, so you are important.  Not just important… you are VERY important. God Sent His Son to die for us.  Just seeing those words twists my heart.  God Loves us.  The entire Bible is God loving us, teaching us, leading us, correcting us…  it goes on and on.  There can be no doubt that we are important to God.

This must mean we have to be happy, influential, and prosperous. We go about skipping through our lives.  When things go wrong it is a direct reflection of something we did wrong.  Something we must fix. If we followed God a little closer, prayed a little harder, or sinned a little less things would be perfect.  Then we read the Bible…

Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. ‘Father will be divided against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.'” Luke 12:51-53

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Matthew 16:24

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted  2 Timothy 3:12

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.  1 Peter 4:12-14

Maybe we are important to God but not the MOST important thing.   What?!  God’s Will, God’s Plan, and God’s Nature trump us.  There are two ways you can look at this.  Some may look at this as depressing. Like we are just pawns.  I see that we are given the opportunity to play a leading role in His Plan, His Nature, and His Will.

Now here is the hard step.  We know God’s Will, God’s Plan, and God’s Nature is more important than us to God.  We need to make it more important than us… to ourselves.

When I discovered this I felt chains fall off.  Imagine you are put in charge of a multi-billion dollar engineering project and you have never even built a shed.  Could you imagine the stress, the fear,  the pending failure. Our life is more complex and important than a huge engineering project.  Now imagine the same job but working for the world’s greatest engineer.  When we realize that God’s Will/Plan/Nature is more important than ourselves, we just have to follow Him.  The Greatest Leader EVER!

So I could beat this dead horse into a entire book but I am going to just leave this one last thought with you.  Have you ever seen a “only child”  that their parents coddle them and make them the most important thing in the world.  Have you ever seen a child like that all grown up.  I fear that many christian have grown up in the faith the same way.

Dude you nailed it on this one! I love how through out the Old Testament God tells the people of Israel that He is not saving them because they are awesome…He says that He is saving them for His own glory! We are important just not the foundation, maybe right above the foundation but not the bottom, and when we get it backwards we fail…good stuff dude!
